Berlin Tegel Airport TXL
A new desktop wallpaper has been prepared and is available for free download, so to speak: a Finnair plane taking off from Berlin’s Tegel Airport. Wow! What a picture! Right?!
BER Barrier Ribbon
August 2013 – the new BER airport is still a long way from being finished, but things and objects are already appearing here and there that at least remind us that the new airport will probably exist at some point. Here, for example, a barrier tape is being used at Tegel TXL Airport that was apparently originally intended for use at BER Airport.
Signpost / Pictograms at Airport Tegel
The design of Tegel Airport runs through every detail. And so also the signposts and pictograms are in the design of the early seventies. At least the signposts that were originally intended by the architect – such as this central signpost in the area of the shopping area. Here are the various pictograms and what they mean: on the left you’ll find the disabled WC and parking deck P1. Straight ahead are various sanitary facilities – washrooms for men and women, showers, breastfeeding and nappy-changing rooms. Also on the left you’ll find the Terminals 0 to 8 and the cab rank. To the right is parking deck P5, First Aid, ATM and a restaurant. The pictogram with the suitcase probably points to lockers – next to it is the reference to Terminals B and C. And at the bottom right, there is a sign pointing to the Tegel Airport bus stop – and the (i) indicates that there are further information options in this direction.
Above this is a completely different signpost. Here the distance to various other places is shown: 6,387 km to New York, 5899 km to Bangkok – 4,401 km to Quatar.
On the left in the picture the red double-decker, which is actually also a signpost of some type: the airplane far points to the restaurant “Red Baron”, which is behind it. The name should be familiar from the U.S. comic series The Peanuts – and of course from German history books.
Evening sky Zion Church Zionskirche
The Zion Church ‘Zionskirche’ in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg – evening mood. The picture is taken with an iPhone4 – no HDR image, no photo enhancement app, and no filter were involved – even though it might look like that at first glance. However, this is one of two photos that I actually wanted to assemble into an HDR image. But the light, the sky, and the deep black silhouette of the Zion Church were dramatic enough for me.
Accordion Container in Bernauer Strasse
An old GDR concertina container.
For a while, an architectural feature could also be admired on the construction site on Bernauer Strasse. Somewhat hidden behind building materials and Wall trees stood an old GDR concertina container – or also known as the Raumerweiterungshalle REH.
In the GDR, the pull-out houses could be seen just about everywhere. Until 1989, about 3400 of these extendable concertina houses were produced. They were easy to transport and could be erected by 6-7 workers within a day. In the meantime, however, they have become very rare – only here and there can one sometimes still marvel at an example.
Seven Sleepers’ Day – Dark Clouds over Mauerpark
This is how the 2013 Seven Sleepers’ Day looked in Prenzlauer Berg > Sun, rain, storm…. Something is brewing over Mauerpark. Here especially impressive thanks to the instant HDR iPhone app…
And, do you believe in the dormouse rule? Or does the Seven Sleepers’ Day not care whether you believe in it anyway? The next seven weeks will show. In any case, I have my fears that this summer might not be quite as sunny as many people hope…
Öresund bridge pylons
All good things come in threes – so I finished a third Öresund Bridge wallpaper and made wallpapers in 9 sizes available for download. This time the pylons are the motif – so the imposing bridge piers that hold the hanging part of the Öresund Bridge. Everyone who has ever driven over the bridge by car will know this view…
Öresund Bridge against Evening Sky
So… The Eurovision Song Contest 2013 is over and the winner is decided: the Danish entry of Emmelie de Forest got the most points and so the ESC now moves from Malmö to Copenhagen.
I found this a fitting opportunity to give myself a jolt and immediately finish a second Öresund Bridge wallpaper. On this picture you can see the bridge from the north – probably THE view of the Öresund Bridge.
The picture was taken on a warm summer evening – but in the end I titled it “Öresund Bridge at night” because I think that is more appropriate than “…in front of the evening sky”. Anyway.

Öresund Bridge in Evening Light
Malmö 2013 – just in time for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 I finally reworked the wallpaper section and added a first image for download: the Öresund Bridge in the evening light.
What this has to do with the Eurovision Song Contest? Well – the ETC 2013 takes place in Malmö – and the bridge connects Malmö with Copenhagen – Sweden and Denmark – Scandinavia and Europe. And Eurovision also connects Europe. It’s as simple as that.
Snow Oderberger Straße corner Kastanienallee
Meanwhile, another iPhone photo: Oderberger Straße and Kastanienallee (Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg) are currently being turned around – but thanks to the onset of winter, nothing is happening – the construction site is at rest. Construction vehicles and materials are covered in snow, in between a mixture of grit, sand, construction rubble and whatever else there is to see on Berlin footpaths. Pedestrians, cyclists and people with prams are practising slalom running – and thanks to the wintry conditions, that’s not so strange – somehow “slalom” is also a popular sport that suits the season.
PS: I must apologise for the pink colour of the snow – it is not road salt – the snow is actually snow-white. But the colouring is a misinterpretation / misconfiguration of the iPhone snow white balance.
