Album: Wendland
Photos from the Wendland in all four seasons – mainly views from the northern part of the Wendland: Dannenberg, Hitzacker, Elbe, Elbe meadows, but of course also Gartow, Gorleben, Lübeln, Lüchow, garden pictures etc.
Dannenberg Skyline
Links der Glockenturm der St. Johannis Kirche, rechts der fast schon kultige Waldemarturm.
Jeetzel, Hiddos Arche Hitzacker
The house boat and restaurant / cafè Hiddos Arche on the river Jeetzel in Hitzacker, seen from the bridge Jeetzelbrücke / Drawehnertorstraße on a sunny day.
Alte Jeetzel in Dannenberg
View to the Alte Jeetzel from the bridge Jeetzelbrücke / Marschtorstraße in Dannenberg.
Blue Wooden House, Red Wine
A walk Am Langenberg – at the very top there is a roundabout and a blue wooden house – and in October the wine glows red.
Alte Jeetzel in Dannenberg

Alte Jeetzel, Schloßgraben
Swans on the Alte Jeetzel at Schloßgraben in Dannenberg.
Sky and Earth and Country Air
Summer of the Elbuferstrasse in the Wendland: blue sky with a few clouds, a field, vastness, peace and quiet. The photo may look like a montage, but it’s not.
Sunflowers and Bumblebee
A sunflower field next to the Elbuferstrasse – shortly before the storm – a small bumblebee flies straight from the one sunflower to the next.
Red Moon
The so-called blood moon was quite exactly one month ago, the full moon was already two evenings before. Nevertheless, on this summer evening in July 2021 the moon shines once again impressively red – or reddish – and full – and lets the sky shine orange like at a sunset.
I took the photo with an iPhone 12 Mini, without any additional filters, of course. The long exposure of the iPhone 12 Mini works impressively well!
Sheep
Sheep by the lake in Dannenberg.
Snake playing Snake [VIDEO]
Do you remember the Snake game that came with every Nokia mobile phone in the early days of mobile communication? Well – this snake seems to remember that game. At least it looks like she’s playing ‘snake’ on the terrace with herself. And she’s winning!
The snake is probably a black adder – in German also called a “Höllenotter” (‘Hell Adder’).

Schnackenburg Port / Harbour Basin
View from the observation tower of the Schnackenburg harbour basin. In the background, the silhouette of the town of Schnackenburg with its church tower. On the right, the Elbe and the mouth of the small river Aland, which flows past the harbour basin into the Elbe.
Hitzacker: Buoy at the mouth of Elbe-Jeetzel
Hitzacker is located where the Jeetzel flows into the Elbe. And at the very tip of the headland that separates the Jeetzel and the Elbe, you can find this buoy. A quite popular photo motif.
Hitzacker Skyline on a Cloudy Day
View on the Hitzacker Skyline from close to the river bank of the Elbe.
Dannenberg by Night
View down Lange Straße, from the market square in the direction of Sparkasse / Keetz / Prochaskaplatz. The half-timbered houses of Dannenberg’s old town are only slightly illuminated by car headlights. In mid-March 2021, Dannenberg is apparently not particularly busy in the evening, although it is only shortly after seven. This may also be due to the Corona pandemic, which is of course also making its rounds in the Wendland region.
Elbe Panorama – Rorschach Clouds Reflection [Video]
Every spring time the banks of the river Elbe are flooded. With the right weather conditions like only little winds and at least some interesting looking clouds an impressive mirror-like effect unfolds that may or may not remind you of a Rorschach image.
Bridgehead of the Dömitzer Brücke in Winter
Winter walk at the Dömitz bridge – view to the bridgehead.
Cat Fight – Two Cats fighting in the Sun [VIDEO]
Two cats putting on a show fight in the early autumn sun. The orange cat first walks across the terrace and is then attacked / chased by the probably younger tricolor cat. The scene was captured by an ARLO Pro 2 surveillance cam around 9a.m. on a beautiful autumn day in early November. I’m really glad, we have these cams up since I now can witness such cat fights from the comfort of my couch. How else would I have seen this cat fight in this beautiful autumn scenery?

a deer visit
Early evening, mid-october: suddenly two deer visit the garden. They seem not to be afraid, look around, walk around – and take a snack.
Rhododendron blossom (purple)
Gardening: Rhododendron blossom in purple in the foreground, an old wood stack in the background.
The purple Rhododendron is not exactly my favorite – but I’m still quite happy that it survived all the years.
Venus
Evening in the countryside – Venus is seen above silhouettes of pine trees. Quietness.
Taube Elbe Panorama
The Taube Elbe near Penkefitz
Sunset Rainbow
This dramatic weather situation prompted me to make a short stop at Penkefitzer Polder, on the Tauben Elbe. Where ornithologists usually lie in wait, this beautiful rainbow could be observed shortly before sunset. On the right, the dyke and the old pumping station; on the left, the small lake or the part of the polder that is usually under water all year round.
Elbe Panorama: Sunset with X-Cloud Reflections
For once, we didn’t cross the Dömitzer Bridge, but crossed the Elbe in the shadow of the Höhbeck with the Pevestorf-Lenzen ferry. And sometimes such spontaneous detours or alternative routes are a really good idea – for example, when you are then rewarded with such a great panoramic view of the setting sun and the clouds reflected in the Elbe. And with a little imagination, you can make out an “X” on the right of the picture – which of course also somehow fits if you are on your way to the Wendland.
Schloss Gartow
A visit at the castle Schloss Gartow during the local culture festival Kulturelle Landpartie 2018.
The sign on the left points to the exhibition, the sign on the right points to the shop and café. The sign in the middle informs the visitors that the castle itself is not open to the public.
